What to expect

We are very excited that artist and printmaker Rory McShane has agreed to come and teach this four day collagraph printmaking course at Long House Studios. Rory is a painter and printmaker who trained at the Royal Academy in London. Find out more about him on our tutors page. One of Rory's specialisms is to use Carborundum (gritty paste) to paint onto the plates directly or from sketchbook drawings. Once dried and sealed it holds the ink, allowing the painted image to be printed. It is a delightfully spontaneous and lively process which often results in evocative and unexpected images. It lends itself particularly well to landscape, and springtime in Kentmere is a special time of blossom and blustery skies. Alongside creating Carborundum collagraph prints you will be able to make another, contrasting print using drypoint. This will allow you to compare the kind of effects you can get with these very different processes. This is a four day course suitable for beginner printmakers as well as those with more experience. You will return home with some beautiful prints, including two 'final prints' on quality handmade paper from our local papermakers, The Paper Foundation Please don't be put off by the idea of printmaking being 'complicated'. It is FUN, and the results are always spectacular. Come and have a go. You will need to bring a sketchbook and materials for outdoor drawing. Suitable footwear and clothing for the spring (changeable) weather. A packed lunch Printmaking materials are expensive. The cost of plates, inks, proofing paper and one sheet of quality handmade paper are included in the course fee, but you will be able to buy additional paper and lino during the week if you wish. Any questions, get in touch.
