What to expect

I am more than excited to be offering this course in 2026. Ever since our experimental Words & Images course in 2024 I have been mulling over the idea of a course more directly focused on The Artist's Book. The tradition of The Artist's Book, ( a work of art in the form of a book) is often considered to have started with William Blake (1757-1827) who made hand illustrated and hand written visionary books, combining text and image to create a work of art. Hand bound by his wife, they were self published and self generated. Artist Book's are as varied as the artists who make them. They might convey ideas sequentially, or through a series of individual pages. They might contain words, or not. They can be made of any materials and use any process (drawing, painting, printmaking, digital processes, popups and fold outs). To find out more about The Artist's Book check out the Victoria & Albert Museum website and search for Artists and the Book This is a course for anybody! The week will begin with an investigation into the idea of The Artist's Book and some activities to generate ideas and explore different processes. By mid week you will be planning and developing your ideas for a book/work of art which you will complete by the end of the week! The group will be small to allow plenty of time for 1:1 support and group discussion. Materials will be provided. The course will be taught by Louise Sturgis
