The Charcoal Landscape

Starts 11 Jul 2026
180 British pounds
Long House Studios

What to expect

To draw the landscape in charcoal is one of the most exciting and somehow appropriate processes. That it is a naturally made material, traditionally made in the Lake District, has a pleasing circularity, but beyond that, its versatility and rawness lends itself to the rugged landscapes of the North. This weekend will be an opportunity to get messy(!) On day 1 you will explore the full range of possibilities of charcoal drawing, experimenting with different kinds of charcoal, different markmaking, and drawing at different scales. You will spend time outside getting a feel for the textures and physical sensations of the landscape whilst gathering visual material for day 2. On the second day you will be encouraged to work on a large scale, so your drawing becomes a physical as well as a visual expression of the landscape you encountered and explored on day 1. We will look at work by the experts! Frank Auerbach, David Bomberg, Dennis Creffield, Jeanette Barnes ... This course is suitable for all abilities.
