The Skills Year
What to expect
This is a year long course, on Tuesdays, for those who would like to spend a day a week developing their skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media. Many of my students have ideas, enthusiasm and commitment but lack confidence in their drawing ability, their understanding of visual language, or their knowledge of materials and processes. It is these foundational skills which form the solid base on which to build your own creative practice and which are difficult to develop without guidance. If you are one of these people, this is the course for you! The course will be divided into three 10 week terms Term 1 will focus on Drawing You will learn (among other things) about - different drawing materials and their characteristics - visual language (tone, line, texture, colour etc) - contrasts (movement/stillness, slow/quick, small/large, expressive/accurate) - drawing for different purposes - drawing from observation and drawing from the imagination/memory Term 2 will focus on Painting You will learn about - what paint is, how it is made, different kinds of paint and their characteristics - painting in oil paint - painting in acrylic - painting in watercolour and gouache - painting in egg tempera By working with different kinds of paint you will be able to find out which suits you best. Term 3 will focus on Mixed Media work You will have the opportunity to learn the printmaking processes of monoprint, collagraph and linocut and develop your own work, experimenting with combining different processes (drawing, painting, printmaking, collage etc). At every stage you will be introduced to the work of great artists and helped to analyse their work and learn from them. For those who have the time, you will be encouraged to do some work between sessions, such as keeping a sketchbook, reading, or preparing for the following week. By the end of The Skills Year you will be - better at drawing and painting! - have in depth knowledge of different materials and their characteristics - be ready the next chapter of your creative journey!
